Flavors of the Season: Spring Edition
Spring is finally here! For this post I wanted to share a wonderful article from a fellow acupuncture practitioner, Eastgate Acupuncture about how to celebrate the incoming season.
March 20th to April 4th is considered the "Spring Equinox", a time that emphasizes balance according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
To harmonize our bodies and move into balance with the season, Eastgate Acupuncture recommends the following:
Consume foods with neutral thermal properties and avoid extremes of hot or cold. Focus on ingredients that support spleen health and moderate liver heat.
Foods to Include:
- Chinese Yam: Supports lung and kidney health, strengthens the spleen, and enhances nutrient absorption.
- Millet: Aids digestion and benefits the stomach and spleen. Try a Millet Congee for breakfast!
- Hyacinth Beans: Helps dispel dampness and supports spleen function. These are also called Lablab beans and are available online. Similar to Lima or Fava beans which would also be good.
- Corn: Regulates digestion and has diuretic properties (especially corn husk tea)
- Adzuki Beans: Promotes diuresis and reduces swelling.
For optimal digestion, balance the thermal nature of meals. Stir-frying cooling vegetables with warming ingredients like ginger can help maintain digestive harmony.

As always, it's recommended to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner for personalized guidance, especially if you're addressing specific health concerns.
